Lack there of...

Back in LA and got a crazy week ahead, so sorry to say there will be few if any posts. In the meantime, feel free to flood my inbox with questions so I'll have something to write about when I do get a moment.

Great Super Bowl last night. I was happy to see the Saints pull it out. (Remember kids: Pulling it out is always key) Big fan of Brees and the Saints organization. Man, I can only imgine the debauchery that went down on Bourbon Street last night. Wish I was there.

I will be chained to my desk until further notice

Back to my old stomping ground

About to jet to NYC for the rest of the week.  Normally I would be pissed that I was being sent back to the snow after a full week in Park City, but I honestly couldn't use a dose of east coast more.  Just read my last few posts...I am convinced I almost left Sundance a Mormon.

My studio is partnering with another studio for the pilot I have been working on.  Lucky for me they are NYC based so looks like I will be visiting quite a bit over the next year or so.

Anyway, Spitzer's Corner, Patsy's Pizza, and Dinosaur BBQ here I come. Any other staples I am missing?  Got to throw Mamoun's and Gray's in there I suppose...I'll pass on Katz's, I like Eisenberg's pastrami more.

I know there are several readers that live in NYC that I have promised to grab a beer with.  Shoot me a message and I should have some time this weekend, just know that I refuse to meet you anywhere in the meatpacking district.

The nominations are in

Sadly, I have not seen 4 of the nominated best pictures.  I have their screener DVDs sitting at home, hopefully will get to them this weekend.

Out of what I have seen, these are my rankings:

1. The Hurt Locker
2. Avatar
3. Tie: Inglorious Basterds / Up in the Air
4. Up
5. District 9

What still shocks me is all the buzz around The Bind Side.  When I saw the trailer for that movie and the voice over said "Sandra Bullock is a sure-fire Oscar contender",  I literally laughed out loud.  Guess I was dead wrong on that one.

Hi, I work for Your Film Is Complete Sh*t Studios

Sundance came and went without so much as a ripple in most players pocket books. I completely struck out this year in more ways than one…more on that later. Not one film that I saw impressed me. My colleagues on the other hand saw a couple flicks that they perceived as commercially viable. There were more than a few late nights of bidding wars where I knocked back one to many rye whiskeys and scotch on the rocks. I recall one particular night where I looked up during a negotiation and could have sworn I saw Bill Gates exchanging numbers with Ben Affleck.
Friends don't let friends see Affleck with his shirt off

I am convinced they were discussing one of three things:

1. A new PC called the Affleck which only functions properly if you buy the Damon accelerator card.

2. Who is a worse actor.

3. How with Affleck's looks and Gates' billions they could take over the world without anyone even noticing.

I can't remember a more un-memorable Sundance. Perhaps I am just getting old and sick of it, but this Sundance was completely….well…lame. There was snow and more snow. Some weird corporate parties. Some graffiti on walls. Meetings and more meetings. Schmoozing and more schmoozing. Side note: Every Sundance I walk away with about fifty business cards, no exaggeration. Guess how many of those people I actually call? One or two tops.
Don't be this guy

I've decided next year I am refusing to accept business cards. I believe the conversation will go something like this:

Schmoozer: Hi I am the duchebag that has no business being at this festival.

Me: Hi Camden Carr, I work for Your Film is Complete Sh*t Studios

Schmoozer: That's great, that's great. What do you do there?

Me: I'm the guy who passes on horrible films like yours.

Schmoozer: Excellent, excellent. Very nice to meet you. Here let me give you my business card.

Me: No thanks, I'm good.

Schmoozer: Excuse me?

Me: I said, I'm good. I don't want your business card.

Schmoozer: Um, ok, why not?

Me: Well the chances of me actually calling you are about .01 percent. And I only say .01 because I want to leave open the possibility that one day I will need a liver transplant and if you happen to be my blood type I MIGHT give you a call. So lets not waste the paper or the $30 you spent printing your crappy film reel logo business cards at Kinkos and call it a day, ok?

Schmoozer: Well then. You sir are an asshole.

Me: I know. It's unfortunate for you that I am. Now do me a favor and run along, you are blocking the view of the smoking hot Mormon Mommy bending over down the street.

And…scene!
Hands down the world's hottest Mommy...if you disagree I will fight you.

Ok, busy day today, got to run. Still got a doozy of a story for you. Wait did I just use the word "doozy"? God, it's good to be back in LA

Back in Lala land

I'm out of the snow and into the sun.  Big Sundance recap post coming your way.  Man do I have a story for you.  It will make Pepe the intern look normal in comparison.

Have a great weekend. And just because I couldn't put one on a previous post.  Here is a hot ass picture of Natalie Portman

Rest in peace J.D. Salinger

The recluse author of America's most beloved novel passed away yesterday of natural causes.

I got to say, I always respected Salinger for not selling the movie rights to Spielberg or Weinstein for what I'm sure would have been many millions of dollars.  Some books just shouldn't be made into films, and this is one of them. Although I have always had a theory that the movie "Igby Goes Down" is a take on the book...as are many many other movies I suppose.

What are some others?  Post in the comments.

Anyways, I tip my hat to you sir for making readers out of milions of teenagers, including myself.  Holden will live on in our hearts forever.

It's Wednesday afternoon in this quiet, little, white-bread, redneck mountain town!

South Park movie anyone?

I haven't even been here a whole week and I'm already going crazy. Someone save me please! I really am questioning why I volunteer to do this every year.

Well it has been interesting to say the least. Most of the films I saw I did not really like, but a few of my fellow studio people found one gem and ended up in bidding war. I'll tell you though, there is nothing like getting involved in a bidding war when you haven't actually seen the movie. Need less to say, taking your colleagues word on a multimillion dollar purchase can be a bit nerve racking.

Anyways, I saw the movie "Hesher" with Natalie Portman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This was also Portman's producing debut. While I didn't hate it as much as most people, I also didn't really like it. It's most redeeming quality is when Portman's fine ass is on screen.

Probably my favorite so far was "Cyrus" starring John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, and Johah Hill. It's an offbeat comedy that had me chuckling throughout. Wait a minute, did I just use the word chuckle? God help me, get me out of here!

More later...
